A diagnosis of cancer immediately sets off a cycle of horror and fear and confusion. Not only is there anxiety about pain and mortality, but there’s also the confusion of how best to deal with the illness.  Proton Therapy is one option, and it is an excellent one.

Quite simply, Proton Therapy provides better results and fewer side effects for people going through cancer treatment. It promises a greater chance of achieving a cure without undue suffering. Compared to conventional therapy, proton therapy is more likely to deliver the precise dose of radiation. More importantly, protons have a much smaller negative impact on the surrounding tissue of the tumor or lesion. Proton Therapy offers many advantages over conventional therapy.

To appreciate the advantages of this revolutionary cancer treatment, it is essential to understand the workings of conventional radiation therapy. Conventional radiation therapy exposes the patient to x-rays, which travel through the patient’s tissues, both the healthy and cancerous ones. As it travels, it destroys everything in its way. Of course, the objective is that it should obliterate the tumor, but the x-rays do not differentiate: they cause damage to the healthy areas, too. Protons, however, target the tumor with significantly more precision than x-rays. Additionally, they cause less harm to healthy tissue as they penetrate the body. Instead, most of their destructive power is unleashed at the tumor site itself.

Because there is no exit dose in Proton Therapy, the healthy tissue doesn’t suffer further damage. The term for this phenomenon is Bragg peak. A burst of energy gets released by the protons at the end of their path, resulting in healthy tissue receiving substantially less exposure to radiation. In turn, there are fewer complications in treatment, which allow our specialized physicians to deliver more potent doses of radiation to the tumor. Obviously, a patient’s chances of success increase considerably.

Diseases Treated
Proton Therapy is one of the most exciting innovations in the field of cancer treatment. Physicians and patients have reported numerous wonderful successes. At this point, though, the successes are still limited to specific types of cancer. The following cancers have shown the best response to proton therapy, to date:

  • Prostate cancer and other urological cancers
  • Cancer in children; pediatric malignancies
  • Lung cancer
  • Cancer of the eye as well as related disorders, e.g. macular degeneration
  • Bone and soft tissue sarcomas
  • Brain cancer and cancer of the central nervous system
  • Head and neck cancer
